Kek Lok Si Temple

Famously known as the Temple of Supreme Bliss, Kek Lok Si Temple is claimed to be the biggest Buddhist temple in Southeast Asia. Without a doubt, it is the most famous in Penang.

The construction of the temple began in 1893 and it was blessed by Chief Monk of the Goddess of Mercy Temple at Pitt Street. The hill around the temple is known as “He San” or Crane Hill. The location of the temple on these hills provides good Feng-Shui for the temple. It is a popular retreat for Taoists and monks in seek of immortality.

The Kek Lok Si Temple is divided into three main areas. In the hill entrance, there is a turtle pond as well as food, drinks and souvenir shops. In the middle area, the temple houses beautiful gardens, temples, a pagoda and the 4 Kings’ Pavilion. At the hilltop is where the Kuan Yin (Goddess of Mercy) is located as well as more temples and gardens.

The best time to pay a visit to this temple is definitely during the Chinese New Year celebrations. During that time, the temple will be lit with sparkling bright hanging lanterns.
