Sri Mahamariamman Temple
Located strategically on Lebuh Queen and Lebuh Chulia in Little India, the Sri Mariamman Temple is a beautiful Hindu temple. This temple was built in 1833 and is specifically dedicated to Lord Subramaniam, the Hindu God.
The Sri Mariamman Temple is also known as the Arulmigu Sri Mahamariamman Temple or simply the Queen Street Indian Temple. It is the oldest Hindu temple on Penang Island. The decorations on the building are elaborate and include precious stones and shimmering diamonds on its façade. It showcases the typical Hindu elements in its design.
The entrance gate or “gopuram” stands at a height of 23.5 ft tall and is impressive. This temple consists of a four-tiered tower and is decorated by 38 vibrant and bright coloured statues of soldiers, floral decorations, four swans and Hindu Gods and Goddesses.
The tower of the temple embodies Mount Meru, which is the holy mountain. The mountain is believed to hold up heavens, and also the world of the gods. Aside from that, there are more than 40 statues of lions and deities in the temple. Inside the temple, there are the symbols of the 9 planets as well as signs of the zodiac. These are carved beautifully onto the wood ceiling.
In the temple, there is a statue of Lord Subramaniam. It is ornamented with intricate jewellery and set at the bottom of a 9 metre-high cupola. During the Hindu festival of Thaipusam, this statue is used to head the procession. The procession starts at this temple and ends at the Waterfall Temple.
When the Tamil Indians first reached Penang, the Sri Mariamman Temple was erected as a small and modest shrine. It was one of the most important places of worships for the early Indian immigrants. In 1933, the temple was refurbished and expanded.
Today, the temple plays a vital role in serving the community. “Pujas” or prayers take place at the temple in early mornings and evenings.
